Whitby
The Jewel in the Crown of the Yorkshire Coast
Whitby is a historic harbour town on the North Yorkshire coast, full of charm, character and things to do. Highgate Howe is just a mile away, so you can easily visit for an afternoon or a few days. Whether you love history, the outdoors or a good day out, there’s something here for you. You may wish to walk down the lane into town, past the Abbey. Or, drive to the Abbey car park and then walk down the famous 199 Steps onto Church Street.
History and heritage
You can feel Whitby’s history as you walk its cobbled streets. High on the East Cliff, the ruins of Whitby Abbey dominate the skyline, a Gothic ruin that inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It has wonderful views over the town and the North Sea, and a museum that tells the abbey’s story.
Natural beauty
Whitby is surrounded by wild and beautiful landscape, from rugged coastal cliffs to the open moorland of the North York Moors National Park. Walk a stretch of the Cleveland Way National Trail for some spectacular coastal views, or take a boat trip from the harbour to see the coastline from the water.
Maritime heritage
Whitby’s seafaring past is everywhere. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum is in the house where James Cook lived as a young man, and it tells the story of his voyages and discoveries through original artefacts, maps and exhibits.
Food and drink
Yorkshire is known for its hospitality, and Whitby is no exception. From fine dining to a classic portion of fish and chips, you’ll find some of the best restaurants, cafés and takeaways close to Highgate Howe. You can also take a taste of Yorkshire home, with local producers making everything from gin to gelato.
Events and festivals
Whitby’s calendar is full of festivals. Whitby Goth Weekend, held twice a year in April and October, fills the town with gothic style and draws visitors from around the world. Whitby Regatta in August is one of the oldest sea regattas in England, with a weekend of boat races, live entertainment and fireworks. Folk fans can enjoy Whitby Folk Week, also in August, a celebration of traditional and modern folk music and dance.
