The Yorkshire Coast
Picturesque Villages & Amazing Beaches on Your Doostep
Highgate Howe sits just one mile south of Whitby, so the best of the Yorkshire coast is right on your doorstep. This is a coastline rich in history and legend. It’s the home of dinosaur footprints, Captain James Cook, smugglers and whalers, Victorian jet jewellery, Britain’s first seaside resort, and Whitby itself, where Dracula landed and the Gothic world began.
Every town and fishing village along the coast has its own character, and its own stories to tell. From north to south, our favourites are Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Runswick Bay, Staithes, Sandsend, Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay and Boggle Hole, Ravenscar and Scarborough.
Something for everyone
There’s something for every kind of day out. Spend it on a sandy beach fossil hunting and enjoying sticks of rock, or wander the higgledy-piggledy lanes of an old fishing village, where tiny harbours shelter from the waves beneath towering cliffs. Ride the world’s oldest funicular railway, browse the boutique shops, take a boat or fishing trip, or enjoy fish and chips by the harbour, or something a little more special at one of the area’s top restaurants. And when you want to stretch your legs, the Cleveland Way follows the clifftops with views all the way along the coast. What could be better?
