The North York Moors

Enjoy The Rugged Beauty of one of the UK's Best-Loved National Parks

Highgate Howe sits just a mile south of Whitby, right on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. This is 554 square miles of heather moorland, ancient woodland and dramatic coastline, and it’s a wonderful place to escape into nature.

Explore the great outdoors

The park is a paradise for anyone who loves being outside. More than 1,400 miles of walking trails mean there’s a route for everyone, from gentle strolls to challenging hikes. The Cleveland Way National Trail is the classic choice, taking in the best of both moors and coast. Cyclists can follow the Moor to Sea Cycle Network, which links the heather moorland with the coast, and riders will find plenty of bridleways to explore on horseback.

History and heritage

The park is steeped in history. Explore the remains of Rievaulx Abbey, a magnificent Cistercian monastery, or wander the atmospheric ruins of Whitby Abbey, which inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Helmsley’s medieval castle and charming streets offer another glimpse into the past.

Wildlife

Nature lovers are well looked after. The moorland is home to merlin, golden plover and red grouse, while the woodlands and rivers are good places to spot deer, otters and rare plants and insects. Along the coast, look out for seals, seabirds and a rich variety of marine life.

Towns and villages

The park’s villages and market towns are full of character. Hutton-le-Hole, with its stone cottages and village green, and Goathland, the setting for Heartbeat, are quintessentially English. Pickering and Malton have bustling markets selling everything from local produce to handmade crafts.

Something for every age

It’s a great place for families, too. Visit an adventure playground, ride the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, or explore the interactive exhibits at The Moors National Park Centre. Events run throughout the year, from guided walks to craft workshops.

Food and drink

After a day out, sit down to something good. The area is full of welcoming pubs, cafés and restaurants serving locally sourced food, from traditional Yorkshire dishes and fresh seafood to artisan treats.
